The Faculty of Humanities welcomes its new cohorts with an impressive orientation day ceremony

First-year students from the Faculty of Humanities gathered in the Tech 9 lecture room at the Polokwane campus on the 26th of February, where they were warmly welcomed into their faculty.

The opening and welcome address was delivered by Prof Ricky Mukonza, Academic Manager of the Faculty in Polokwane. In his speech, he quoted the well-known theologian John Henry Newman from his book The Idea of a University, saying, “A university is a place where knowledge is pursued, where the intellect is disciplined and where the mind is enlarged. The purpose of a university is not only to train people for jobs, but to cultivate individuals capable of critical thought and moral judgment.”

This message set the tone for an inspiring orientation, during which the first-year students were introduced to their faculty lecturers, key staff members, and external stakeholders who shared motivating words.

One of the guest speakers, Mampenyane Jubilee Malebana, Provincial Inspector from the Department of Transport and Community Safety, encouraged students to practice discipline and manage their emotions. She told them, “This diploma will take you far if you use it wisely. It will open doors for you. So do not limit yourself, spread your wings and fly. Trust and believe that you are in the right field. Every day you have the power to spark change, to promote justice and a safe future for everyone.”

Adding to the words of encouragement, Makgoka Oscar Magoro, who currently serves as Supply Chain Management Assistant Director at the same department, emphasized the importance of managing studies effectively. He encouraged students to learn essential skills, develop their communities, and never stay silent when they understand important concepts. He also reminded them to always have something to look forward to.

The orientation provided first-year students with a strong foundation for their academic journey while inspiring them to pursue knowledge, personal growth, and community impact.
