The Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) Vice Chancellor and Principal Prof Tinyiko Maluleke successfully celebrated the launch of his new read Faces and Phases of Resilience: A Memoir of a Special Kind. This memoir was delivered in the presence of academics, students, active readers and authors at heart in Polokwane on August 1, opening the month of women strong.

In a captivating 49 chapters, Maluleke captures beautifully the stories of the likes of his grandmother, his mother, Thabo Mbeki, Antoinette Ntuli, Dudu Mokoa, Nokuthula Sibiya, Michelle Obama, Mosa Moshabela, Tshilidzi Marwala, Imtiaz Sooliman, Reuel Khoza, amongst others, and goes on to even dedicate a chapter (7) to his “tall, brown, and handsome” late dog Bruno.

In the crowd and given her moment to share her sentiments was the Premier of Limpopo, Dr Phophi Ramathuba, who applauded Maluleke’s sharp pen. “We celebrate Prof Maluleke, whose work continues a legacy of artistic expression that shapes our identities and reflects the richness of our experience,” she said. She further emphasised the importance of parents giving their children names that will inspire them, adding to the fact that the name ‘Tinyiko’ means ‘Gift’, which is exactly what the author in academia is serving - his gift of educating, inspiring, and developing minds through reading.

“In education lies the future of any nation,” was a powerful slogan spoken by Prof Lesiba Teffo of the University of South Africa (UNISA), who added to the list of academics who blessed the launch with their presence. In his speech he emphasized how the youth of today hardly read and warned how this can never compete with a society that is anchored in knowledge.

Books were available for purchase at the venue and as a heartwarming gesture, Prof Maluleke handed free copies of his memoir to students of the people’s university, to encourage them to keep the inspiration of the young boy from Valdezia who had big dreams to change the world through academia.
