ICT student receives overall top achiever award after securing an impressive 91% average

Mmaphuti Julia Kgomo is a third year student pursuing her Diploma in Computer Science (Extended Curriculum) under the Faculty of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) at the Tshwane University of Technology. Just recently, she celebrated a huge milestone in her academics when she was awarded as the top student in her faculty at the 2025 Academic Excellence Awards, held at the Polokwane campus. Kgomo’s love for technology emerged in high school when she studied Computer Applications Technology (CAT). She was successfully admitted to the Faculty of ICT in 2023.

She confidently lists obtaining a 91% average and being awarded as the top student in the Faculty of ICT as one of her best moments to date. “I felt exceptional, seen, loved, happy, blessed, and filled with so much joy that I almost shed a tear. I am so glad that I got recognized for all my hard work and sacrifices, the sleepless nights at studythons and early mornings at study areas, and just hoping that it would all work out in the end, which it did,” she said. She credited the love and unwavering support she received from her family, the tutors who availed themselves, the lecturers, and everyone who played a role to get her where she is today.

Adding to the list of achievements was when she attended the 2024 third annual Limpopo Varsity Hackathon (LVH), where she collaborated with students from the University of Limpopo and University of Venda, and won the 1st place prize together with her team.

During her first year, she took the responsibility of being a class representative. In May 2024, she was appointed Deputy Secretary for the Faculty of ICT House Committee and served her term until August 2025. In the same year, she was appointed as a Mental Health Champion by the Student Development and Support (SDS) in October 2024, and will be serving her term until October 2025.

“Every setback is a setup for a comeback,” she quotes Dr Willie Jolley, further stating that everyone has different goals and paths. “What is essential is to do what makes you happy. Keep going, never give up and believe in yourself. Never let anyone negatively tell you what you can and cannot do because your abilities are known only to yourself and your Creator,” she concluded.
