Student-Led Donation Drive Supports Defunded Learners at TUT Polokwane campus

Two hands working together are better than one. The Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) Polokwane campus bore witness to this proverb when its Campus Student Representative Council (CSRC) offices hosted the official handover of goods of the ‘Charity Begins at Home’ residence donation drive.

This drive was inspired by the CSRC’s urgent need to assist students who were faced by the unfortunate and sudden defunding of their allowances by financial aid schemes. Proudly partnering with the Student Development Support (SDS) and Economics and Finance this initiative saw the SRC members visit various TUT residences, encouraging and prompting students to help their brothers, sisters, classmates, and friends who were abruptly cut from their funding at the beginning of the year. In high-spirit response, students warmly donated non-perishable goods, which included toiletries, canned foods, and other day-to-day essentials. 

 

After a successful 2-day collection drive, the goods were finally handed over to SDS and Faculty Economics and Finance as the distributors of the foods to the students on the 12th of August 2025. Madipere Anokwuru, Clinical Psychologist based in the SDS directorate acknowledged the CSRC for their remarkable work. “If we as a directorate can do so much in the little time, imagine what we can do in a year. Not a lot could be done without the help of the SRC. We can implement the programme, but you are the drivers. Let your work not stop here, let it continue to inspire others to come,” she said.

As ‘giving back’ is an evergreen gesture, Mankoni Ramoraswi from the Faculty of Economics and Finance spoke about the importance of giving. She further explained about the similar programs that are currently running on campus i.e. The “10 cents Student Initiative” programme that was initiated and implemented in 2013, where anyone can donate from as little as 10 cents or more into sealed boxes which can be found in and around campus.

 

While this program would have been nothing without the students, the representative of the Student Support Services (SSS) of the CSRC, Jabulile Masumbika extended her heartfelt gratitude to all parties who were involved in making this drive a success, concluding “A huge thank you to all SRC members, SDS, Economics and Finance champions and all Polokwane residence committees, service providers and stakeholders. The drive is over, but the program does not end, let us continue with the spirit of Ubuntu.”
