TUT Polokwane Campus celebrates outstanding mentors and tutors

After a busy year of study marathons, balancing academic work, and supporting and upskilling fellow students, the 2025 mentors and tutors of the Polokwane Campus had reason to celebrate as their dedication and hard work were recognised at the Academic Excellence Mentors and Tutors Recognition Awards. The event, themed “Recognising and Inspiring Future Academics," honored those who have contributed to the University’s vision of moving “from good to great.”

Hosted by the Academic Excellence Office under the Office of the Campus Rector, the event acknowledged mentors and tutors for their commitment to academic success. Each received a certificate reflecting their leadership, dedication, and contribution to student development.

The celebrations began on 27 August with the Faculty of Management Sciences, led by Head of Department Professor Ilze Swarts. In her message of appreciation, Prof Swarts encouraged students to remain motivated and embrace teamwork, saying, “Never give up the desire to be willing because willingness is better than ability. That characteristic will carry you through and through.”

Senior Lecturer Dr Mmakgabo Malebana also shared insights on resilience and the importance of research, urging students to pursue postgraduate studies. “Start reading more. Everything begins with developing a passion for a particular concept in your modules. Then set goals, practise daily, be consistent, and stay disciplined,” he advised.

The second edition of the awards took place on 31 October, marking the close of the month with celebration and reflection. The Faculties of Humanities, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), and Economics and Finance joined forces for a joint ceremony to honour their mentors and tutors.

Addressing the audience, Economics and Finance Academic Manager Dr Ngonidzashe Chiranga emphasised the value of academic involvement. “These certificates are more than just tokens of appreciation; they are powerful tools that can empower students and advance their careers,” he said.

ICT tutor and Mr TUT Polokwane 2025, Letago Kekana, also shared his gratitude, reflecting on his journey as a tutor. “I would like to thank all the lecturers and departmental assistants for ensuring a smooth journey. Their support and guidance are the reason we are being honoured here today,” he said.

The event served as a fitting conclusion to a year of academic excellence, celebrating the dedication of those who continue to inspire and uplift others through mentorship and learning.
